Quiet Mapping

Manchester.

Quiet Mapping is an ongoing research project exploring how we experience, find and create quiet within the city.

Beginning in Manchester, the project uses walking, listening, drawing and sensory observation to explore the quieter spaces, moments and routes that exist within the city. It considers quiet as a personal and sensory experience, shaped by movement, atmosphere, materials, people, ecology and our individual needs.

Through walks and observations across Manchester, I am developing a collection of quiet places, practices and sensory conditions. These observations are being translated into maps and visual research, inviting people to notice the city differently and consider where they might find space to pause, regulate and reconnect.

The project builds on my wider research into Quiet Spaces and my interest in designing environments that support different sensory needs. It asks how we might make navigating the city more inclusive by recognising that access to quiet, rest and sensory refuge is an important part of how people experience urban space.
